When Gabe Hernandez and his wife, Sylvia, lost their 15-year-old rescue dog, Sammy, they were both definitely heartbroken. But slowly, the couple moved on from their loss and a year later, they felt that it was time to open up their home again for another dog.
And so, Gabe started to search local shelters and that was when he came upon Bella’s picture in the newspaper, The New Mexican. It was definitely real love at first sight for Gabe. He already knew that she was the one for them so he excitedly called his wife to get him the phone to get in touch with Donna Leshne, founder of Dew Paws Rescue. He wanted to adopt the little dog.
A two-year-old Terrier mix, Bella was rescued by Leshne on Bonnie’s Barn in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was with two other dogs who were also caught up in a hoarding situation. And as soon as Leshne placed Bella up for adoption, a flood of interest came through the rescue. Everyone wanted to take her home and thankfully, Gabe got one of the very first slots.
Gabe and Sylvia met Bella a few days later and Leshne gave them a two-week trial period with Bella and advised them that there might be some crying. But when they got home, Bella quickly settled in with the couple, and soon enough, she moved from her bed to the couple’s king-sized bed. Gabe and Sylvia were just surprised to see her cuddled with them in the morning.
After the two-week trial period, Bella was officially adopted by the Hernandez family. According to Sylvia, Bella was a queen in the house, and even though she went through a painful experience, she remained to be bright. Bella knew she was in a good home and that she would always be loved and taken care of no matter what happens.
