Blackie is a 14-year-old dog that was neglected by his owners most of his life. The black dog was mainly kept outside their house in Texas and wasn’t provided medical care.
Days before Christmas, his owners surrendered him to the Austin Animal Center. By then, he had gone blind because he didn’t receive treatment for his cataracts and glaucoma.
They also learned that the elderly dog has a tumor growing on his chest. The shelter’s vets said that the dog didn’t have long to live. Euthanasia was the only option that they considered. The dog might not be able to withstand multiple surgeries.
End of life care
A kind lady named Brunie Drumond, a volunteer at the Austin Animal Center, learned about Blackie’s predicament, and she felt terribly sorry for the pooch. When she discovered that the senior dog was kept outside of the house most of his life, she felt that she needed to let Blackie know what it is to be loved.
Brunie volunteered to take the dog home and give him end-of-life care. Based on what the vets said, he expected Blackie to survive for only a few days. She vowed to make those remaining times to be the best moments of her life.
Tender loving care
The holidays came, and Blackie had an amazing time with his temporary mom. Brunie gave him extra love and attention, and the dog was happier than ever. He was so pleased that he became energetic and playful. His condition dramatically improved.
Although they won’t remove his tumor anymore, Brunie and the shelter staff members hope that the dog will live as long as she can, pain-free and full of happiness. He may not have much time left, but at least, he would never have to sleep outside anymore, cold and all alone. He is now surrounded by love and has learned how it is to be a part of a family.
