Nick Montez, a US Marine in Afghanistan, was discharged from service in 2013. He was disappointed to leave because he couldn’t take Mally with him. Mally, a bomb-sniffing military canine, was his partner.
Nick has been waiting for an update from the US Marine office to see if he can adopt Mally and he has been waiting for an approval for years.
The duo is in charge of looking for and detecting explosives and other similar devices. They started working together in December 2011 and have been together since then. When Nick and his partner were on duty, he constantly looked after his companion. On hot days, he double-checks to ensure that Mally is given her IVs before heading out on patrol. IVs are used to keep dogs hydrated when the weather is too hot.
They had a weekly schedule where they worked and trained together. Nick also took care of Mally’s physical appearance by trimming her toenails, massaging her pads, and cleaning her ears.
They surely had a special connection. However, when Mally was transferred for another assignment, their teamwork and connection came to an end. Montez indicated that their separation was unexpected and that he was unprepared. They’d been working together for a year, and the time they’ll have to spend apart will be difficult for them both.
Nick was discharged in 2013, but he was unable to take Mally with him because she was still needed in the military.
He got a tattoo to honor his partner, Mally, when he was discharged from military service. The tattoo had Mally’s name, a paw print, and Mally’s military ID number. Even though he knows he would be able to adopt Mally in the future, he still got the tattoo.
After a long wait, Montez received a letter stating that Mally had completed her military service and was available for adoption. He received numerous donations and assistance that will expedite the adoption, and he was ecstatic that their tale had touched so many people.
Mally was reunited with Nick after a seven-year wait. Nick intends to spoil Mally throughout their time together, away from military service.
Mally is home!
After years apart, a Lewiston Marine has been reunited with the bomb-sniffing dog he served in combat with.
Nick Montez picked up Mally in Texas yesterday and landed back in the Inland Northwest today.
