Cano was already nine years old when he was found tied to a post outside an animal clinic in Orange County. The clinic staff took him in and called the local shelter.
While waiting for the officers to arrive, the dog managed to capture the hearts of everyone in the medical facility. This made the people there wonder why his owners would abandon the sweet dog.
Animal services took Cano in and gave him his own kennel. This is because even though the pitbull mix was comfortable around humans, he did not trust other canines. This created a dilemma for his rescuers.
The shelter had to find a person or family interested in a senior pooch and, at the same time, doesn’t own any other dogs.
Billboard
Like most animals under their care, they promoted his availability for adoption. When they noticed Cano was getting ignored, they bumped up his exposure. After 100 days, it seemed that no one was interested.
With the help of rescue groups and animal advocates, they got a billboard for the old dog. The shelter staff even prompted news agencies to give Cano exposure. Sadly, they still could not find anyone with the right conditions to provide the canine with a good home.
After another hundred days, the senior dog’s long wait finally ended.
Happiest dog in the world
Cano waited more than 200 days for his moment to come. The collaborative efforts of the shelter staff and rescue organization finally led them to the perfect family for the senior pooch.
According to the new owners, they passed by Cano’s billboard several times and became curious about him. What sealed the deal was when they saw a news feature about him. They were convinced the dog would be better off living with them.
When the new family was loading Cano in their car, the dog was furiously wagging his tail and had a happy look on his face. He was finally getting his forever home.
