As the founder of an animal charity organization called Good Sprout Rescue and Sanctuary, Audrey Quillin has seen her fair share of neglected and abused dogs. The 29-year-old animal lover from Westerville, Ohio gets her heart broken every time she encounters a canine that has gone through hardships.
She has many stories to tell, but none of them have made her go through an emotional rollercoaster as much as her experience with an adorable pooch they named Sampson.
Down for the count
Sampson was just five weeks old when his owner, a backyard breeder, surrendered him to Audrey. He should have been with his mother and other siblings at that time. But he was suffering from a brain infection which made his head balloon. It was so severely infected and heavy that the little pit bull couldn’t even lift his head.
The poor pup was also malnourished, and parasites were devouring his insides. He constantly vomited, and his puke even had worms. The rescue group’s vets were astonished to see the young dog was still alive after everything they had learned and seen.
Despite everything, Audrey told them to treat the little pooch. They gave him antibiotics, put him in an IV, drained the abscess on his head, and even made a blood transfusion. But they were not optimistic he would survive the night.
Against all odds, he made it. And as the days passed, he seemed to grow healthier and more robust.
Viral
Miraculously, Sampson survived the ordeal and beat his infection. But it also came with a price. The pup suffered permanent damage to the left side of his brain. This affected his behavior.
Sampson had difficulties regulating his emotion. Thankfully, with a loving environment, he wasn’t aggressive. But when he is excited or happy, he has a peculiar way of showing it.
Sampson would do somersaults. His actions have been posted online, and it has gone viral. Numerous people watching him online are amused by his antics. Some, though, are worried that something might be wrong, and he might be adversely affected.
According to his vets, the little dog’s condition doesn’t cause him any pain. He is healthy and thriving. Audrey decided that even with dozens of applications for adoption, the best place for Sampson would be at the sanctuary.
