One can’t help but wonder how creatures of different species can form such strong bonds. Of course, we humans see it as people from different countries attempting to communicate but being hampered by a lack of understanding of each other’s culture and dialect. Perhaps a power greater than people and animals motivates them to see past their differences – this power we know as love.
Love can be romantic, platonic, or the kind that motivates us to help people who are in need. This could be why Hantu the German Shepherd went out of her way to adopt an orphaned opossum named Poncho.
Poncho’s mother died in a vehicle accident. He held to her, hoping that his close grip would bring her back, but he was unsuccessful.
Without his mother, the newborn opossum’s odds of survival were bleak. Thankfully, a team of vets discovered him just in time and gave him the help he needed.
Poncho was nursed back to health by the team, but the baby opossum craved for his mother. The team searched for an opossum that would take him, but they were unsuccessful. It was at this point that Hantu entered the picture.
Hantu’s maternal instincts kicked in the instant she met Poncho. Despite the fact that the German Shepherd had no puppies of her own, she took care of the opossum. The dog and the marsupial connected instantly, as though they both understood their duties in each other’s life.
Poncho’s desire for a mother was met by Hantu’s desire to have her own children. Most people were motivated to develop a greater awareness of animals as a result of this special relationship.
Hantu and Poncho live at the Rare Species Fund, a group that has programs on wildlife conservation. They also like going for walks in the woods with the volunteers.
