A UK boy named Leon Kirby-Bulner had great difficulties communicating with others. Diagnosed with autism and a rare brain condition called Chiari malformation, the lad stayed in his own world and avoided interacting with people. His parents, who lovingly call him “Mancub,” after a character in the book entitled “The Jungle Book,” were scared their child would never open up.
But their fears were removed when they adopted a Cocker Spaniel called Fern. Leon was four years old then.
Best buddies
Leon’s parents, Karsten and Hayley Kirby-Bulner, who lives in Andover, ran a falconry business. They needed to get a dog to help them with their daily work. While searching for a canine, they met Fern, who was three years old at that time. They fell in love with the pooch and her sweet personality.
The couple decided Fern would make an amazing family pet. It was the wisest decision they had ever made.
The moment Leon met Fern, the little boy’s eyes lit up. He felt a bond with the adorable canine instantly. Hayley’s tears flowed when she saw the happiness on her son’s face. In the next few days, the small kid and the dog became inseparable.
Essential
Hayley looked for a trainer and had Fern undergo a program to help the pooch become more helpful to Leon. The dog learned how to fetch clothes and food. He was also taught to assist the boy when he has his episodes. The Cocker Spaniel would apply deep pressure stimulation to relieve his headaches and offer comfort.
Over the years, vast improvements were seen in Leon. He became more outgoing and cheerful. The boy is more talkative and open to interacting with people.
According to Hayley, she couldn’t imagine how Leon would be if Fern didn’t enter their lives. They are so grateful they found the dog, and their child can grow up in a better environment.
