Most people wouldn’t even bat an eye whenever they see a stray dog lying on the side of a road. Most of us would assume that animal control would magically appear and do their job. Unfortunately, this isn’t how it works and these dogs need our help to inform the right people that they need help.
In Russia, a group of kids came across a dog lying on the side of a road. The children realized that the dog was sick and desperately needed help. The kids called for help and rescuers from a Moscow-based animal rescue organization called Dog Space came to help.
The rescuers named the dog Nika and stated that she was already on the verge of dying. Nika was having trouble breathing and she couldn’t even stand up. They were thankful that the kids who came across her did the right thing by calling for aid.
Dog Space immediately took Nika to the veterinarian to get the treatment she needed. Soon after they took her to the vet, they started to learn about the extent of her injuries, which also told them about Nika’s horrific past. Aside from a nasty infection, Nika was also suffering from a broken spine.
The vets and animal rescuers believed that Nika’s broken spine wasn’t the result of an accident. Instead, someone deliberately hit her so hard that it broke her spine and intentionally left her to die.
Emergency surgery is needed to save Nika’s life. However, the vets stated that it was very unlikely that she would walk normally again. Normally, dogs in Nika’s condition would get euthanized but the rescuers decided to give her a chance.
As they expected, Nika was unable to walk after her surgery. However, her rescuers were still determined to help her live her life to the fullest. They gifted Nika with a doggie wheelchair and helped her learn how to use it.
Nika was eventually adopted by a loving family who often takes her out on adventures. Thanks to the kids who found her and the rescuers who gave her a second chance, Nika is finally living the life that she deserves. Here’s a video featuring Nika’s rescue story.
