The Italian dog consistently makes news by attending the church mass to pay his last respects. Ciccio adapted this routine after attending the previous mass in honor of his deceased caretaker, Maria Lochi.
The members of Santa Maria church in the small village of San Donaci have now come to terms with the dog attending the mass. Remember, this church held Maria’s funeral. By then, Ciccio was following the events when the coffin of the caretaker entered the sanctuary.
Father Donato Panna recognized the punctuality and the discipline that this dog carried. The pet typically sits beneath the church altar, next to the priest.
One newspaper noted that Ciccio must be missing his master since he used to accompany her to the church every Sunday.
Interestingly, Maria was a pet lover who kept several dogs apart from Ciccio. Undoubtedly, her favorite pet was Ciccio. As this dog remained focused on attending mass regularly, he won the villagers’ hearts.
Those who fell in love with Ciccio began supplying it with meals and shelter. They only did it outside a covered area within the church compound. The unquestionable dog’s loyalty aroused the interest of the church attendees; hence, more attention fell on Ciccio.
The dog could only compensate for the love he got from Maria by attending the mass and probably comforting himself. The gap between Ciccio and her deceased caretaker was evident, especially when he had to narrow it by attending church.
Maria is no more! What other options for Ciccio? Find a new human companion? Indeed, the affection is still active; no one could fit into the gap.
There is more hope for Ciccio as people begin to encourage him. Ciccio now feels more comfortable.
