It’s always fun and exciting to go hiking and explore the great outdoors, especially if you have a dog. However, it can also be quite dangerous since nature can be unpredictable, which is why we should always be prepared for anything.
Having the proper training and equipment can help us survive life-threatening situations that may occur, especially when we’re exploring high-risk areas, such as avalanche zones.
In Salida, Colorado, a couple was backcountry skiing and snowboarding on Monarch Crest, which is an avalanche zone. They were with their dog and were having a great time ascending the mountain. Unfortunately, an avalanche broke out just above them, which threatened their lives.
Thankfully, the couple was prepared and were experienced climbers and hikers. One of the hikers was able to deploy the airbag, which prevented them from getting completely buried in the snow. The other person was almost buried but could keep one hand above the snow to be easily located.
The person who deployed the airbag was able to self-rescue and also save their partner’s life. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to locate their dog but the couple was brought back to safety by the rescue team.
While the couple was glad that they were safe, they were also heartbroken knowing that their dog was probably dead and buried under several feet of snow. Even when the search and rescue team tried to look for signs of the dog, they still weren’t able to locate it.
After a few days passed, the couple already accepted that they would never see their beloved dog again. However, they got a call that surprised them. According to Chaffee County Search and Rescue, the dog was found days after the incident happened.
The dog somehow manage to survive the cold and was able to make its way to the trailhead, which was more than a mile from the site of the incident. The couple was shocked but happy that their dog was found. Here’s a video telling the miraculous story of how the dog survived an avalanche.
