It is quite challenging to help a rescue get adopted, more so if they are in need of special treatment. However, while many possible adopters overlook canines with disabilities, this kind-hearted fur mom from Mendon, Vermont had opened her doors to dogs with special needs.
Meet Tracey Fowler and her pack of disabled canines she refers to as The Fowler Herd. Ever since, Tracey had always had a soft spot for dogs. She enjoys surrounding herself with bubbly pooches and treats them like her kids.
However, her love for disabled pets only grew when her beloved German Shepherd, Hayden, was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy. The disease affects the spinal cords of older canines and often results in them being paralyzed in the hind limbs.
Eventually, Hayden needed a wheelchair, but this didn’t hamper his spirits one bit. He was still as playful as ever and enjoyed frolicking in their spacious backyard. Unfortunately, Hayden lost his fight with the disease and left Tracey heartbroken.
His death inspired Tracey to adopt other rescues who needed special needs like Hayden. This was her way of honoring her beloved German Shepherd’s resilience and spirit. She began adopting one dog until she had a pack of eight, six of them being disabled.
The Fowler Herd, despite being on wheelchairs, had brought nothing but joy to Tracey. They are as jolly as normal canines and always shower their fur mom with lots of love and affection. Many of their everyday shenanigans and daily adventures can be seen on their social media pages.
Tracey hopes that through sharing her and her pups’ stories online, many people would think twice about putting down their disabled dogs. Their Facebook page now boasts roughly 130,000 followers and a little over 100,000 likers. Look at one of their recent adventures in the wild here.
