Dogs with special needs often struggle to meet people who are willing to care for them. Not everyone wants to take on the challenge and responsibility that comes with owning them. However, some people have no problem with bringing home a special needs dog and giving it the life it deserves.
Yakoo is a dog that was born blind and deaf. He was a result of reckless breeding by greedy people. He was abandoned at a veterinary clinic and remained there until he was transferred to an animal shelter.
At first, no one would think that anyone would want to adopt a dog like him. After all, there is only so much that Yakoo can do as a dog. However, one man was eager to prove everyone wrong and show the world what Yakoo was capable of. That man was Erik, and he adopted Yakoo after he saw the dog on an adoption website.
While most people would not bother teaching a blind and deaf dog anything, Erik was different. He managed to teach Yakoo several various tricks that were initiated by light touching. To everyone’s surprise, Yakoo figured out how to do most things that normal dogs could do.
If Erik wanted to make Yakoo fetch a ball, he would first hover it near the dog’s face. Then he would tap the dog’s nose twice, which indicates that he wants Yakoo to find the ball through smell. That type of physical contact is a common way that Erik and Yakoo communicate.
Yakoo had never been a burden to Erik since they developed a way to communicate. For example, if Yakoo wanted to go to the bathroom, there was a bell he could ring. If he wanted to eat, he would poke Erik’s side using his nose.
Yakoo was able to show people how intelligent and capable he was, regardless of his disabilities. Erik’s efforts in understanding how to work around the dog’s limitations were essential to making that happen. Together, they proved the nay-sayers wrong and inspired those in a similar situation.
