Animal rescuers are very different from animal control. Rescuers try to find a good home for every dog they can save. The latter has no qualms with euthanizing for the sake of controlling the animal population.
The story you will read shows how far an animal rescuer is willing to do for a stray.
Calvin, an animal rescuer, was driving around Alabama when he got a strange feeling that he should stop at a certain road exit. He soon discovered that his gut feeling was correct. He found an injured dog on the side of the road.
When Calvin got there, police and animal control were also present. He talked to the people handling the rescue. He asked if he could take custody of the dog because he knew the tragic fate that awaits any dog under animal control.
Animal control had a rule before they can hand over the dog’s custody. The dog must remain in their care for seven days first. During that time, Calvin took the time to contact one of his friends, Kendahl. She is also a dog rescuer, but she has more experience in fostering.
The stray dog was named Ike. He needed to get his legs amputated as soon as possible. However, the rescuers didn’t have enough money at that time. Fortunately, Calvin was able to raise money for the surgery.
After the amputation, Kendahl took care of Ike. She had a dedicated area just for him. It was big enough for her to also be there and sit beside him when needed.
During the first few days of Ike’s stay, he was hardly moving. He had to rest and recover from his surgery, so that was expected. Eventually, spending so much time with Kendahl made him realize that he was safe.
Kendahl also introduced a friend to Ike. She had a cat named Uno, who became an essential part of the dog’s recovery. Kendahl found out how well Ike bonded with other animals, which made her excited to find him a good home.
